Plan 5 repayments started in April 2026. Plan 5 has the lowest threshold and the longest term, but its interest is RPI only, with nothing added on top. Repayments come out of your pay through PAYE, so you don't pay anything while you earn below your threshold.
Should I overpay?
If you're unlikely to clear the loan before write-off, overpaying can mean paying more in total. Run the projection above with your balance before deciding.
Frequently asked questions
When do I start repaying my student loan?
From the April after you leave your course, and only once you earn above your plan's threshold.
What is the Plan 5 repayment threshold?
£25,000 a year (about £2,083 a month) for 2026/27. You repay 9% of income above that.
Which plan am I on?
It depends on where you lived and when your course started. Check your account on GOV.UK if you're unsure.
Does my student loan affect my credit score?
UK student loans repaid through PAYE don't appear on your credit file, though mortgage lenders may ask about repayments.
