How GPA is calculated

Each letter grade has a point value (A = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3 and so on). Multiply each course's points by its credit hours to get quality points, add them up and divide by total credit hours.

GradePointsGradePoints
A / A+4.0C+2.3
A−3.7C2.0
B+3.3C−1.7
B3.0D+1.3
B−2.7D1.0
F0.0

Pass/fail and withdrawn (W) courses usually don't count toward GPA. Check your registrar's policy on repeated courses: some colleges replace the old grade, others average both.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good college GPA?

A 3.0 is often the minimum for scholarships and internships, 3.5+ is competitive for many graduate programs, and 3.7+ is typical for Dean's List.

What is the difference between GPA and CGPA?

Semester GPA covers one term. Cumulative GPA (CGPA) covers every course you've taken.

How do I raise my GPA quickly?

Courses with more credit hours move your GPA most. Retaking a failed course can help if your college replaces the old grade.
